A COUNTRY CLUB NIGHTMARE SCENARIO TOO ABSURD TO BE TRUE . . . EXCEPT IT BASICALLY HAPPENED

The premise of a new digital short is something only a clever, golf-savvy comedy writer could conceive.

A man abruptly collapses with chest pains at his golf club. The paramedics are called. The clock is ticking.

One problem: the two paramedics are women, and the ailing man is located inside the men’s-only grill room.

The ensuing debate between the exasperated first responders and a clueless club manager bound to archaic rules is meant to be satire. No way this would ever be a discussion. Would it?

Actually, if you read a Golf Digest feature last year called, “The Stuffiest Country Club Stories We’ve Ever Heard’, it might seem familiar. More on that in a second, but first, the skit, which Golf Digest’s Hally Leadbetter wrote alongside writers Kate Scarpetta and Forrest Shaw.

As for the real example, the names and location were withheld to protect the heartless, but multiple sources close to the club have confirmed its veracity. As in the skit, it involved a man falling ill at the club and requiring immediate attention. But here it wasn’t the paramedics denied access to the club but the man’s wife. And it wasn’t just because he was in the men’s grill. The entire club was men’s only, so his wife wasn’t even allowed on the property.

Anyway, there are a handful of other headscratching stories in our feature on country club rules. They weren’t meant to be jokes at the time. How they look now is another matter.
